A prayer in honor of Jess's birthday:

"O Lord, glorify his station, shelter him under the pavilion of Thy supreme mercy, cause him to enter Thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate his existence in Thine exalted rose garden, that he may plunge into the sea of light in the world of mysteries."

When we bought a home in Silverlake 2 years ago, Jess was one of the first neighbors to warmly welcome us into the community. I looked forward to our weekly chats, when he would stop by as he was out walking Blazer (sometimes nearly dragging a hesitant Blazer behind him! ha!). Jess was such a kind, thoughtful, sweet, funny man--he even kept treats in his pocket to share with all the neighborhood dogs. He checked in on us, offered renovation advice, shared stories of his past and of his family, and would even keep an eye on our home when we were away.

Even though we didn't know him long, we miss him dearly. I still catch myself looking out my kitchen window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Jess and Blazer walking by. Though I am so very saddened and frustrated to know this virus took him from his family and friends far too soon, I take comfort in seeing the photos and reading the stories of the incredible life he lead.

Jess' kindness and sense of adventure are an inspiration for us all.

My sincerest condolences to his family.

What I will always remember about Jess was his generosity of spirit, his joyous passion about anything he did, whether it was describing his fishing exploits or barbecuing the salmon he had caught to share with others or vehemently filling the room with his words against some outrageous injustice. I imagine him joyously viewing God’s “splendors on the loftiest mount” and “plunging into the sea of light in the world of mysteries.”

That beautiful smile will be forever in my memory. It represented his love for all of us that knew him.. his kindness , love of life, passion for justice. We will miss you so much Jess, but you have left us with much to appreciate in life. God has lifted you to the most joyous of places and i can see you smiling there.

Jess was a wonderful brother-in-law. While distance made getting together very often a challenge, when we did meet up, Jess was so welcoming. We enjoyed many fun 4th of July festivities hosted by Jess and Jeannine on the lake. Jess was always happy to take us out exploring the lake in their boat. So many nice memories. We will miss Jess, his infectious laugh, and his fabled story telling. Rest in Peace Jess.

Mr. Arledge was my 9th grade science teacher at Huntington many moons ago. I will always remember his passion for teaching and the way he truly cared about each of his students. He would always stick up for the girls when the boys were picking on them and put them in their place. He was a truly amazing teacher. My condolences to his family during this difficult time! And yes....in his memory, WEAR A MASK, WASH YOUR HANDS, SANITIZE, and BE SAFE!!

I first met Jess, when his son Scott was into BMX. My boyfriend Tim, & Scott were going to a race ( I think) & we stopped by their house near Lake Sacajawea. He wasn't my teacher, but he recognized me. A few years later, 1987? I was a single mom, starting over, going to college, & he took a chance on me & rented to me my 1st apartment alone. He introduced me to another tenant, Sharon, who has been a good friend since. And I introduced him to Octavio, who he rented to as well for many years. I ended up living there 10 years!! I remember Jess had this old car in a storage unit that he always said he was going to restore, but never seemed to find the time because he was always so busy. Teaching, building, spending time with family. I wonder if he ever did anything with it? He was a great landlord,& more importantly a man who was a friend. He was a jokester & had this somewhat goofy grin that disarmed you when you were having a bad day, even when he was having a rough day himself. My phone number was above one of his daughters,& he'd call me, and even if he hadn't meant to call, he'd laugh & talk a minute. He called me July 8th @ 5:17pm. I wish my hands weren't mucked up mixing meatloaf so I would've answered. I assume he was calling a daughter, but I will miss the random chit-chat anyway. It was my pleasure knowing him,& I'm thankful he was a small part of my life, that changed my life.

So many fun memories of Jess. I’ll never forget the time I spent at the family lake house with the Arledge family. Jess taught me how to waterski and inner tube and left me with some of my favorite childhood memories. He was also one of my middle school teachers. I don’t remember many details of my middle school education, but I will always remember the difference between desert and dessert because of him.  I am so sorry his life ended too soon. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories.

Mr. Arledge was my 8th grade, "new math", teacher at Coweeman Jr. High his first year. As a class we struggled through this together. He wasn't afraid to tell us that he was learning the new concepts along with us. He made it a fun learning adventure. Blessings to his family. Love and hugs

To the mustard that burned in my memory ...

Rest in Peace Coach Arledge. Learned many things from you at Coweeman as my teacher, football and track coach. I became a football coach and teacher because of mentors like you.

His Life
August 4, 2020
Life will never be the same for the family and friends of Jess Michael Arledge, who died at the age of 80 on July 14, 2020, after a short battle with Coronavirus. Jess was born to Jesse and Margaret Arledge on March 2, 1940 and was the youngest of four children. God brought a man into the world who absolutely loved people, and whose smile, laugh and storytelling innately drew people to him.

He graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in Education. He moved to Kelso, Washington to become a teacher at Coweeman Junior High School in 1963 and met his soulmate, Jeannine, who he married in 1964. Jess and Jeannine have four children who were raised in Cowlitz County.

Jess had an adventurous spirit and vivaciousness for life and learning. He was an extraordinary man that threw himself into accomplishing whatever he set his mind to. He was a gifted athlete in high school and college playing baseball and football and coached baseball and football in Kelso. He wanted to learn to fly, so he earned his pilot’s license. He was a member of Mazamas and climbed many mountains in the Pacific Northwest. After a few years, Jess decided to pursue his interest in building. He was a self-taught and skilled builder and craftsman, who started Arledge Construction Company, building the Longview Presbyterian Church and a multitude of custom homes in the area, prior to earning his Master’s Degree in Education and returning to teaching in Kelso, Washington as a science teacher at Huntington Junior High School. He was a passionate and exciting teacher who loved to share knowledge and his love of learning with his students. Jess was an avid fisherman; he spent many enjoyable hours bass fishing on Silverlake and salmon fishing on the Cowlitz and Columbia River. From building his own boat to collecting antique cars, Jess never got bored.

He will be exceedingly missed by his wife, Jeannine; his children and their spouses Floyd Arledge and Laura of Tacoma, Washington, Jeannie Arledge and Barry of Eastham, Merseyside, United Kingdom; Scott Arledge and Missy of Longview, Washington; and Jamie Evans and Peter of Camas, Washington. He found joy in his role as “tickle monster” and supplier of copious amounts of sweets to his grandchildren Chastity Mcconahay, Crystal Stine, Matthew Arledge, Kathleen ‘Katie’ Arledge, Benjamin Hale, Mary Hale, Carlie Arledge, Zachary Arledge, Ashley Arledge, Grayson Evans, and Logan Evans; his great-grandchildren Hunter Stine, Brooke Stine, and Lexi Arledge.  He is also survived by his siblings Gary Arledge and Virginia Garman, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Blazer. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anita McMullen.

To honor Jess, in lieu of flowers, please wear a mask, socially distance and wash your hands so others don't have to die of this horrible virus before their time, as Jess did.

His family will hold a private burial service.

Silverlake and other stories

August 4, 2020
In 1972, Jess heard about a small summer cabin that came up for sale on Silverlake. He went right out to see the property, called mom, and she agreed, sight unseen, that the one-room cabin, with no running water and a porta-potty was an opportunity not to be missed. He bought it the same day.He was right.

There started the tradition of a standing open invitation to friends, each Sunday, to enjoy barbecuing and boating at the lake.Over the years, Jess crafted the cabin into a beautiful lakeside retreat his family moved into, as their primary home. From sharing his love of bass fishing, to swim tests for the kids, where Jess swam underwater to make sure their feet weren’t touching, to getting people up on skis, no matter how many times they fell, Jess worked hard to make the cabin a place of lifelong memories and magic.

Jess helped create a place where kids loved to bring their friends, grandkids spent the summer, extended family gathered on holidays and annual cribbage tournaments were held.Every visitor got a boat ride around Goat Island, to see the wild goats. It was a badge of bravery to let Jess pull you on the inner-tube, as he would inevitably pull you through the lily pads and try to flip you off by circling the boat and creating gigantic waves. When the electricity went out, Jess would light candles and pull out his guitar to serenade us with songs we will always remember, like The Fox Went out on a Chilly night.During the last few months of his life he was teaching himself how to play Classical Gas on his guitar.

At night a huge fire would magically appear in the fire pit, along with supplies to make smores. Enchanted evenings around the fire pit, where family stories were told. Ahhhh. The stories.Jess loved telling stories and over the years our family came to cherish the classics.Remember the time when dad was showing us how to safely use the new canoe, and he flipped it in the water; or when he went scuba-diving with Floyd only to surface and see photos of a large shark following them beneath the water; or the time when he had students drop raw eggs, packaged in various coverings, out of his second story classroom as part of a science experiment, or when his children would have slumber parties in the yard, he would sneak into the lake at night, cover himself with lily pads and weeds and come out as a swamp monster, scaring all of their friends. Our family is also left with a beautiful children’s book he wrote about characters that live in the rainbow, and a multitude of poems and songs reflecting his perspectives about life and his deep appreciation and love for his wife Jeannine.
