Dorothy Elizabeth Mejstrik was born on January 14, 1959 to Dennis and Cecilia (Gentrup) Johnson in West Point. She received her education at District 81 country school in rural West Point, Sacred Heart, Guardian Angels, and graduated from West Point Central Catholic in 1977. Dorothy went on to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated from the Lincoln School of Commerce in 1979. On November 17, 1979, Dorothy married Christopher Mejstrik at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. The couple made their home in Howells and were blessed with three children: Megan, Jordan, and Bryan. Dorothy worked as a licensed Customer Service Representative for Howells Insurance Agency. Following the retirement of Walter Mejstrik, she took over the bookkeeping duties at Northeast Nebraska Automation.
Dorothy was an active member in many organizations, holding office in the Community Club, Howells Public Library Foundation, and Howells Community Fund. She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church where she was an EMHC, Altar Society member, and served on the Parish Council. She was an avid reader and loved her book club. Dorothy could be found walking with “granddog” Remy and especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, Scout.
Christopher Lad Mejstrik was born August 20, 1957 in West Point to Walter and JoAnn (Bazata) Mejstrik. He attended District 51 kindergarten, St. John Nepomucene elementary school, and was a 1975 graduate of Howells High School. After graduating from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1979 with a degree in Business Administration, Chris returned to Howells to work in his father’s business, eventually buying the company, Northeast Nebraska Automation. On November 17, 1979, Christopher married Dorothy Johnson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point.
Chris was an active member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, serving on parish council; St. Francis Memorial Hospital Board; Howells Fire Department for 20 years; Howells School Board for 12 years, serving as president; currently on the Village Board; and volunteered as coach for his daughter’s softball and sons’ baseball teams. Chris had an extremely strong work ethic and greatly loved doing what he did. His favorite pastimes included playing cards and golf, and time spent with his family. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Howells; daughter Megan (Thad) Huenemann of Lincoln; sons Jordan Mejstrik (Mikayla Faltys) of Howells and Bryan Mejstrik of Lincoln; granddaughter Scout Huenemann; father Walter Mejstrik of Howells; sister Melissa (Dennis) Thorne of Lincoln; brothers Ron (Barbara) Mejstrik of O’Neill and Patrick (Teresa) Mejstrik of Valley; and aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Chris was preceded in death by his mother JoAnn on July 25, 2012; and grandparents.
