Edwina Marshall was born in Durant, MIssissippi to Mildred and Edward Pratt,Sr.The family moved to Chicago in the 1940's to Atgeld Gardens, a public housing project on the city's far south side,where Edwina was influenced by the Rev.Addie Wyatt.She became active in the community's gospel choir, and her family became known in the community foe their generosity to less fortunate families in the community.She later married Plez Marshall,Sr and the couple moved to the Woodlawn community,where she became active in community work with families.She worked diligently for the Chicago Department of Human Services,providing emergency assistance to families who were homeless and at risk of homelessness,and administering the DHS summer lunch program to social service agencies across the city.Edwina worked with Larry Hawkins and the University of Chicago,local churches,and community leaders such as Dr.Authur Braizer,Eugene Sawyer,and Cecil Partee to recruit disadvantaged children from the Woodlawn community to participate in enrichment programs and supervised recreation. Edwina received numerous awards for her dedicated work,including recognition from Mayor Richard J.Daley for helping to mediate a violent and longstanding dispute between two large families living in the Woodlawn area.She retired from her work in 1982 but continued to volunteer as a Board of Elections judge,and volunteered with local churches across theChicagoland area to help needy families. Edwina(Ween) accepted christ at an early age and was a member of Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago,Later she became a member of Christ Universal Temple, where the Rev.Dr,Coleman is Pastor. She joined the Salem Baptist Church in 1997 where the Rev..James T.Meeks is Senior Pastor.Edwina was a graduate of the John Marshall Law School.where she recieved her Social Work degree.She is greatly missed by her family and friends.Resting with the Lord ,rest in peace momma.
