Garrett's Obituary

June 5, 2011

Garrett Van Der Beek, a Civil War veteran who died on June 9, 1904, was not identified until recently through research by members of the SUVCW in Wisconsin for Janet Bosler, a descendant who lives near Norfolk, Nebraska, who is a member of the SUVCW Auxiliary. Complication of identifying Garrett as a veteran was due to the spelling of his name in the Wisconsin records; his name was spelled Vanderbee, vs. Vanderbeek. Garrett was born on September 29, 1831, in Oldebroek, Gelderland, Netherlands. He enlisted in Company A, 32nd Wisconsin Infantry in Alto, Wisconsin in 1862 and was discharged in 1865 as a Corporal. After the war he moved with his family to a farm near Holland in 1873. His wife Jacoba preceded him in death and he left six children, four of which are living, Lucas Van Der Beek of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. John Van Engen of Firth, Mrs. G Fischer of Pella, Ne., Mrs. Rev. John TeSelle of Hospers, Ia.  Garrett was an active member and deacon of the Holland Reformed Church.
