As like every day I looked at my calendar and realized that Mama had left us on this day. Then I looked up and saw the most spectacular and fiery bright sunrise.......Could she be speaking to us? Bitter sweet it was, but then I knew, that choosing a lot for my retirement home it had to face the sunrise. I am sure she could recite a poem that would be fitting to accompany this morning's sunrise. Tried to add my video from this morning but could not. Thanks Mamma still living in our hearts.

An old gospel song says, "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain." These song lyrics sum up Jean's personality perfectly. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who asked, and even to those who did not ask. She was a kind, loving soul, and it was an honor and a privilege to know her. Love you Jean!

I'm sorry for the delay in writing my tribute, but I think that the procrastination was a subconscious way of not making her passing real. I have such fond memories of Auntie Jean. My earliest memories involve her picking me and Melissa up from elementary school. We would always return to an afterschool snack and her loving, tender ways. Always a teacher, she would help us with our homework and teach us more than what was being covered in class.

As an adult, one of my favorite memories is when my mom and I her visited her at her home one summer day a few years ago. She was about to catch the bus to a cookout at the Senior Center, but we offered her a ride instead. What started as a quick visit, turned into an all day affair. You know she was a talker, so she had to introduce us to ALL of her friends. She also made sure that we were well fed and we spent the entire day at that cookout! She was a kind, loving soul, who I will always love. Rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to the Stephens, Charles, and Ramsey families....My untie Jean (mamma) was definitely the matriarch of the family. She loved to cook, sing, teach and nurture the young ones of the family. One of my most fondest memories was when I was in St. Vincent for the summer, I couldn't have been more than 8 years old and mamma Jean was taking me to the school where she taught. While teaching the lessons for the day, I was in class (skylarking) a popular vincey term that meant goofing off. After a stern warning I still continued to play until I felt a lash! I looked up and untie jean was standing over me with a switch. After drying my tears I straightened up and listened to the lessons of the day. After school ended, we started to walk home until we got to the Ravishing Rabacca River! It was so strong and wide. I couldn't believe this was the little river we walked through in the morning. As we stood there wondering how we were getting home, I young man came over that she knew. He offered to take us across the river, and before I knew it he hoisted untie Jean up in one arm and me in the other. As we crossed the river his legs trembled step by step fighting the current that has been rumored to have swept trucks and people away in the blink of an eye. When we got home I had dinner, some ketchup and rice, ground provisions, and some meat. That was one of my most memorable times with Mamma Jean. Untie you have touched the lives of countless people and you'll be missed dearly! Love Jr.

Mama Jean,
For as long as I can remember, you have given so much of yourself and your wisdom in a strong and quiet way without expecting anything in return.
I often marveled on how you navigated the MTA bus lines so masterfully to get around.
You will be forever in my heart and thoughts.
I pray for your eternal rest in the bosom of our LORD.

To Hyacinth, Jennifer, Irma and family I share in your sorrow with love and
friendship. May the LORD give you peace and comfort during this time
and days ahead.

I remember meeting this beautiful woman 17 years ago. Chris kept saying to me “my Grandmother is going to love you”.When he took me to meet her, I will never forget the smile on this little woman’s face and her laugh. I knew instantly I would love her so much. I was never more right. Mama Jean and I clicked, even more when we learned our birthdays were 7 days apart. There’s not enough words to express the kind of relationship I had with her. I would tell her all the time “you’re my little homegirl”. From our phone conversations to our Sunday Church dates to our errands and porch talks, she became my own Grandmother that I’ve always wanted. She treated my as if I was her own grand child, she would tell everyone including the cashiers in the stores “This is my adopted grand daughter” lol. She became my sponsored God mother When I was confirmed 7 yrs ago. If there was anything on my mind, whether I was upset, sad, worried or excited about something I would call her to tell her. She encouraged me in so many ways. When dealing with my own health battles she told me to keep fighting, And don’t give up. she also encouraged me to finish school. She was the 1st person I told I am graduating this year. She gave me a big hug and laughed, she was so happy for me. Every time she saw me after that, she called me “the graduate”. Words can’t express how much I will miss you Mama Jean. Your laugh especially.I am so honored to have been apart of your life and you apart of mine and Our daughter Jordan Tracy’s life. Thank you for piercing our hearts with your beautiful spirit. We will continue to honor you and you will continue to live in all of us.I’ll always remember your words “Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear”. Enjoy your new home in heaven with My Tracy. Rest in peaceful paradise Mama Jean, until we meet again. I will love you forever Angel. - Candacy

It was truly an honor to have known Mama. Such a humble loving, caring, selfless woman who always had a welcoming smile on her face. Never failed to acknowledge and welcome your presence whenever you were around her, if you weren't around she made sure to ask about you and how you were doing. She never forgot to ask about your kids or compliment you on how nice they are growing, just an outstanding super superb woman. We are all blessed to have crossed paths with such a wonderful Super Woman. May her soul rest in eternal peace. Sleep on Mama , you've done well.

Her Life
March 31, 2020
Jean Luenda Stephens was born July 13, 1928 in Georgetown, St. Vincent to Constance Stephens and Joseph Garraway. Affectionately called “Mama Jean,” she was the second child of six siblings: Ruth, Joseph, Ivan, Irma, and Tabitha. As one of the eldest children, Mama Jean’s siblings were her world and ignited what was to become a lifelong passion for caregiving.  Mama Jean began her professional career as  an educator. If you spent long enough by her side, without a doubt you have heard stories of her treacherous journey across Rabacca River to arrive at Sandy Bay School.  She served as a teacher and head teacher at three government schools for 32 years (starting at age 13) before eventually immigrating to the United States in 1980.

Mama’s dear sister Irma, brother-in-law Danny, and nephew Mark played a special and central role in her familial, social and spiritual life. This bond between them was fortified from her arrival in the US, and grew even stronger in Mama’s latest years.  Their indescribable sisterhood and friendship was known to all.

Mama Jean modeled dedication and service to all who knew her. Her influence led all of Mama Jean's children and grandchildren to lives in service.  Mama Jean’s two beloved daughters,

Jennifer and Hyacinth, chose careers in caregiving and education as nurses. Together, Mama Jean’s daughters birthed 5 children: Melissa, Christopher, Nicole, Natalie and Brandon. All 5 of her grandchildren benefitted from her maternal devotion – none of them ever needed a babysitter because Mama Jean cared for and helped educate each of them. Hyacinth’s children Melissa, Christopher, and Brandon all entered into careers in service and protection. Nicole and Natalie, Jennifer’s children, both entered into careers in healthcare and education.

To many, Mama Jean was an educator, a friend, a confidant, a neighbor, and sister in fellowship. To few, she was a sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. To everyone, though, she was a home. A place to return. She was warm, generous, humorous, and most importantly, she was constant. Always offering a meal and a story. Sometimes a MetroCard, sometimes a pack of gum, and if you were lucky – as so many of us were – sometimes a song. Mama could be heard singing Beulah Land from her backyard, bedroom, bathroom, even from her hospital bed.

I look away across the sea; where mountains are prepared for me
And view the shining glory shore; My heaven my home forever more

Mama Jean’s middle name, Luenda, means light, in Latin; a word that could not be more fitting for her. She was our light. Always reminding us:

Yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision;
But today well-lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.

Mama joins her beloved mother Mama Connie, uncle Basil, siblings Ivan and Ruth, and brother in law Danny in heaven.

Mama Jean is survived by:

Her siblings- Irma, Jeff, and Tab

Her eldest daughter and son in law- Jennifer and Howard

Her youngest daughter and son in law- Hyacinth and Ronald

Her nephews- Ivan Junior, Mark, Andrew, Noel and her nieces - Rhonda, Patricia, and LaFleur

Her grandchildren- Melissa, Christopher, Nicole, Natalie, and Brandon

Her great grandchildren- Chloe, Jordan Tracy, and Zuri

And many grand nieces (including Shatira, Madison, Nubia, Alexis, and Zadie), grand nephews, extended family, friends, neighbors, fellow teachers, and former pupils

The family thanks you for your love and support and would like to express our immense gratitude to her dedicated caretakers – Palone Johnson and Natacha Pierre

For my great grandma

April 5, 2020
Mama used to sit in her gray chair by the window and sing the song Beautiful Dreamer every day I was there with her after school. She would always tell me stories about our family and what it’s like where they are from. I remember walking with her to the mailbox and she would show me how to put themail in the box. She taught me how to pound nuts with a rock and a hammer. She used to ask me to read to her. I learned a lot from her and I have so many good memories. When I would leave her, she would tell me that I’m her guardian angel. Now she is mine. I love you Mama and I’ll miss you a lot.

Memories of Mama Jean

April 4, 2020
My first meeting was just by chance.....she watched me park and asked why I was so late.... she made me even more late than ever.....we talked outside for another half hour....she told me of  her brother Ivan, sister Irma, life as a teacher in her home land at a tender age.She captivated me with stories....including the famous river crossing...As the daughter of a school principal who like her started his career at a tender age of 16, I knew then she was special....to get away I had to say we shall finish up this chat later...I learned that if you need to be some where very soon do not stop to chat you will be late for sure. She never forgot to tell you how she loved her daughters and grandchildren and beamed with pride of their accomplishments. As time went by I learned one day the connection of Auntie Irma and that I knew her daughter for years..Then came the news I am having a 90 th birthday party next year .....my grand children will let you.....really !.....What an awesome Woman she set up her own birthday party but made me promise not to act like I knew....She made an indelible mark on my life.....we both love cooking..codfish cakes and cou cou and codfish ......glad I had to chance to spent such treasured moments....Cry if you want...sing her favorite songs.....but we will never forget Mama.
