Joe was a fantastic mentor and educator, and was a very kind, thoughtful and empathetic person. I learned a great deal from Joe that has had a major impact on both my professional and personal lives. Thank you Joe, I will miss you greatly.

I will always remember Joe as a brilliant scientist, a great mentor and an extremely kind person. Being part of his research group he made us all feel like being part of his family. I am deeply thankful for everything he did for me, and will forever miss him.

In 1995, I had the privilege of meeting Joe for the first time at Caltech for an interview for a potential postdoctoral position in his lab at JPL. As it was written on his face, Joe was extremely kind, considerate, thoughtful, and generous, which never changed during my tenure in his lab for two years.

As a mentor, Joe invested so much in my professional development that I found it hard to meet his standards with my own students. He opened his family doors for us and was always generous with his time when we needed him.

Joe's kindness, generosity, and beautiful smile will be truly missed.

It is a comforting thought that his memory will live through all of us who had the privilege to know him.

RIP, Joe, and thank you for everything.

Ciao Joe, you were an extraordinary person, capable of touching the heart of people in incredible ways. Professionally, for me, you were a mentor. But very soon you became more, of a friend and a father. And this you did for everybody around you. The personal relationship was for you more important than any more professional goal and this made you unique, and great. I will forever miss you and a piece of you will always be in me, I hope to carry it to the best of my skills.

Joe is in my memories and in my heart. We shared a great deal of science and fun. We even shared students, and we worked in a very collaborative manner.  Joe taught me a great deal, and I sincerely miss him.
