Katherine Elizabeth Nicoll died on Friday, May 17th after a brave 14-year fight with metastatic breast cancer.  She was 56 years old.  She passed away at home peacefully while being held by her family and beloved dog Milo.

She was preceded in death by her mother Katherine Janek (Wozniak).  She is survived by her husband Michael Nicoll, her son Matthew Nicoll and wife Nathalie, daughter Victoria Nicoll, Father Francis Janek, Brothers Alan Janek, Joesph Janek and wife Mary Anne, Nick Janek and wife Laura, and Francis Janek Jr.  In addition, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and friends of the family.

Kathy was born in Painesville, Ohio to Francis & Katherine Janek and spent her childhood and young adult years in the Chardon & Leroy Township area of Northeast Ohio.  She graduated from Riverside High School in 1986 and began her continuing education at Lakeland Community College, Cleveland State University, and Eastern Michigan University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1995.

In 1990, she made a trip to Denver, Colorado to visit her brother Alan, who was in the US Air Force. Here she would meet her future husband Michael Nicoll who served together with him.   They kept their distanced love going for the next few years and were married in August 1992.  Their love & marriage remained strong for next 32 years.

In 1997, Katherine and Michael were blessed with the birth of their son, Matthew David, and then again in 2000 with the birth of daughter Victoria Kay.   She dedicated herself to her family and always provided the love, support, and wisdom needed to keep us properly centered as individuals and as a family.   She was a member of Prince of Peace for 22 years and continued to educate our family always using Gods wisdom.

She had a love for horses, dogs, many animals, and enjoyed skiing, track & field, gardening and anything to do with the outdoors. She was very active in her children’s lives supporting their growth.  She was a Girl Scout leader, participated in Boy Scout activities, numerous sporting events with the kids, enjoyed playing golf with her husband, loved the beach trips, and also opening up her home to all our children’s friends over the years as if they were one of her own.  Kathy was very generous and giving of her time and love to many.

The family would like to thank the staff at UAB Kirkland Clinic Oncology, Hazelrig-Salter radiation center, and Compassus Hospice care for their professionalism and compassion.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 12pm on Saturday May 25th, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4600 Preserve Parkway, Hoover, AL. 35226.

Kathy came into our family 33 years ago as a young girl who had fallen in love with my son Mike. As the years flew by we could see this was a match made in heaven. Kathy created a loving home and two beautiful children to fill their lives with joy and happiness. Her generosity and caring ways was felt by many. I will miss you but you have gone to a better place. Until we meet again in God's kingdom. Love Mom Nicoll

I’m blessed to have gotten to know Kathy over the last few years - she and Mike welcomed my daughter into their family when she married Matt, their son. Her love for her family shined through in every conversation we shared. I wish we would’ve had more years to get to get to know each other better. Sending prayers to the Nicoll and Janek family for strength and peace.

When I think of Kathy, I remember her kindness, ability to listen, and how she loved to share her cooking skills. Kathy taught me how to cook Thanksgiving dinner.( Her mom taught me some cooking things, also). Kathy is so much like her mom and now they’re together in heaven.  Kathy, I look forward to seeing you again, seeing your big smile, sincere eyes, and talking to you.  I will miss you my sister and friend.  Love, Laura
