Dearest Dr Leong
You've always been to me this steady chap in senior management, the sanest of all. Always the calm voice of reason. Thank you for all that you are and may our paths cross again for the lives to come. RIP.

Dear Dr Leong
You were the only one from upstairs who openly expressed your appreciation for what I was doing. For that and the kindness you've shown towards my family, I am grateful.
Rest in Peace, Dr Leong.

Hi Lawrence, I remember when we did the Lay Preacher’s Course, you decided to leave the course after scoring A in your assignment. You said better leave when you are at the peak. Guess you left at your peak now, we catch up in heaven.

Dr Leong,

I do not interact with you much in the course of work between NParks and our company. However, I have never failed to see Dr Leong at NParks events. He is dedicated to his job, even on weekends when I hiked on Bukit Timah hill and I saw that he was discussing work related matters with the Nparks team.

The industry will miss your guidance and dedication.

Dr Leong, I wish you could hear me. Last night I didn’t sleep well bcos Dr
Leong, you departed so quickly ... saw you in the afternoon and then
you passed on at 7 pm plus. Dr Leong, you are a man with a clever
mind, steady hands, always wanting to help people & to smoothen things
out. I will remember you well beyond the wonderful legacy of great
works accomplished for NParks & the greenery of Spore. Personally,
your most lasting legacy is your compassionate soul. You touch
people. I’ll miss your fatherly voice …. how are you keeping Swee Ping
& your family members … I'm praying for you all…” I know know you love your Lord
Jesus Christ deeply & you have a large heart for people.
"Farewell Dr Leong. Will miss you greatly." Swee Ping

I had the privilege of serving as Hon Secretary in AMKMC in the early 1990s under Lawrence when he was LCEC Chairman. Never have I seen a more gentlemanly and kind soul as Lawrence. He was such an easy person to work with. It was a joy to work with him and to attend Prayer Meetings with him. Never an unkind word emanated from Lawrence. He had an amazing way with words and a very compassionate and loving sense of humour.

I take comfort in knowing he is in a far better place with our Lord Jesus Christ. My deepest condolences to Nancy, Esther and the rest of the Leong family. Lawrence will always be deeply loved and remembered.

Dear Dr Leong

It really pains and saddens me that we have lost a dear boss, mentor and friend. However, I am greatly comforted that it's not forever "goodbye" but "see you later". We will meet again, but okay... we will heed your reminder to take our time.

Thank you so much for your guidance towards us. Your genuine care for our well-being has touched everyone. I am deeply humbled and awed by the love you have for NParks and staff. The hard work and dedication you have put in is recognised by all of us. We are appreciative of a boss who was always supportive of us whenever we face difficult situations.

I will sorely miss your calm presence and reassuring voice...the same one that gave me courage and confidence to take on new challenges years ago. I will also remember fondly the witty and humourous words that speak of your humility even though you are a giant in NParks, e.g. "I walk around the office, pretending to be smart.", "I keep quiet and look calm because I don't know what you guys are talking about!"

Do not worry for us. We will do our best to carry on the good work you have done and do you proud.

Enjoy eternal joy and peace in God's presence. Till we meet again. ❤️

Dear Dr Leong, I can't believe you're gone.

Thank you for your steady counsel and guidance all these years, when we found ourselves with tricky media queries or seemingly unresolvable issues. How you would stride right over into our office, armed with a hardcopy printout and a pencil, ready to work through whatever it was with us. When the CCE office used to be the previous configuration, I still remember you were baffled by how to get to my table! And yet you came over anw.

Your door was always open. If we needed a consult, we found that we too could do the same and approach you. As a young staff working in the public sector for the first time all those years ago, it was inspiring to see that in my DCEO.

Thank you for being that light and steady voice of reason that saw us through many difficult moments at work. The thought of you never walking into our office or hearing your calming voice again fills me with great sadness. But I will hold on to the fact that you are free of suffering and pain, that you are at peace and in a better place with God.

You will forever be missed.

I have the privilege to serve with Lawrence in the Boys' Brigade ministry many years ago. I was the officer and Lawrence was assigned by Church to serve as Assistant Chaplain. Beside providing pastoral role, Lawrence was always there on the ground joining us in parades, camps, planning retreats and cell group. A very humble, gentle and caring person, whose presence gave us much encouragement. Through his life, I saw Christ's humility and love in actions. This has encouraged me to grow in Christ, to serve in the Kingdom of God and honour Him. Rest in peace my dear Brother, my Mentor. Till we meet again. Thank you for your life!

To the family, friends and colleages
I had the privilege to meet Dr Leong Chiew or Lawrence as he introduced himself to me. On first sight, an everlasting impression of wisdom, kindness and a great sense of humour was forever imprinted on me. I could listen to his words of knowledge, the stories validated by wisdom. What a Great Man. My he rest in peace.

Dear Dr Leong,

I met you at MND in 2018 when I was feeling quite disillusioned about the public service. Even though I worked with you and your NParks colleagues for only a few years, I cherish those years deeply — I saw what a truly mission-minded public agency could do with steady hands and good hearts, charged with the stewardship of our most precious natural capital. Thank you for inspiring and leading a new generation of environmentalists and nature warriors. You will be so missed.

Dear Dr Leong,
It feels so familiar to address you as such in all my emails as I have done so for a good 10+ years.
I am going to miss this.

At work, you were the quiet, unassuming but humourous boss. Beneath the calmness, you have to constantly balance and worry for various needs - the outcome, the staff welfare. The solutions may not always be there. But you care and you do not shirk responsibility. Thank you for leaving me with countless inspiring moments to continue our sense of purpose at work.

In faith, you are the honest Christian who spoke the Lord's Prayer with me, for me and my children. In good times, you showed me exuberance in God's blessings. In bad times, you showed me weakness as we all are. But we never gave up praying. And you thank everyone and sang for all who came to bade farewell - for now.

What an amazing Child of God!

Remembering you always,
The trouble maker.

I am greatly saddened to have lost a brother in Christ as well as a 'big brother'. However, I know that Lawrence has gone to a place where the gardens are just perfect, no administration is required and he can truly enjoy it in the company of our Lord Jesus. For that reason, I am really happy for him.

We as children in Malaysia have always enjoyed our time together as cousins (6 of us), every school holiday, from the secret smoking of straws, to playing Carrom, table soccer and our family outings. Lawrence was always very gracious and lets me win sometimes and would oblige playing with a pesky cousin amidst his heavy study schedule. I always admired how gentlemanly and kind he was to our grandmother who used to live with the family.

Our paths hardly crossed except for the last decade or so, when we would stop in Singapore on our travels. The wonderful memories of a kind, gentle and Godly man remains etched in my memory.

Nancy, Esther & family, we shall pray across the miles, for strength for you all in this sad time. May you have the assurance of His presence.

Blessings,
Caroline & Chris Mundy

Never will you meet a man more faithful to his values and commitment than Dr Leong. Have known him since he was my tutor at the university and for more than 40 years as colleagues. He was totally committed to the mission to make Singapore a great place to live amidst the lush greenery and clean air. Truly an amazing mentor, teacher and friend. Above all he was a true worshipper of our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus
