A TRIBUTE TO MY GRANDMOTHER-BY
MELODIE MAKENA
Dear Shosh,
I never thought I would be writing this goodbye to you so soon. Just a few months ago, I came to stay with you and Maitu at your lovely home in Embu and I must say that, that visit was awesome. I admired how you took care of your mother; making sure she had everything she needed, including taking her outside to bask in the sun and preparing her meals without fail.
You have always been so kind, loving, caring and not to forget, the amazing sense of humor that you had. I remember how you used to share with me the funny videos you found on Facebook, and we would laugh and laugh as we made fun of the clips. “Shosh dotcom,” I would call you.
Your laughter was so unique and infectious. I try to imitate how you used to laugh, so people can understand what I mean, but I fail since it was only unique to you. People who got to experience you and your relentless energy must know what I mean.
Your check in calls, though short, were always engaging and very heart-warming. You habitually told me how much you loved me. What else will I miss of you? Your advice.
“Take care of yourself and study hard,” you’d counsel. In a word, you talked to me about life. You wanted to make sure I am set for life. I will do just that!
Grandma, you were such a generous person. Though without a regular income, many times, you’d send me some money for upkeep. Moreover, you were a master chef. You taught me some kitchen skills like how to make mouth-watering cuisine. Your popcorn recipe was so on point as well!
You were a prayer warrior. One of the moments I remember is how you used to wake up in the middle of the night to pray and mention members of our family by name-blessing them. Surely, the prayers did no go unanswered.
I admire the relationship you had with my mum. You were so tightly knit. You were truly her best friend, and I am glad she got to have you as her mum.
I love you and you will forever remain in my heart.
Rest in Eternal peace Shosh.
