Legacy of Roman J. Selig III

Roman J Selig III, of Hoover, AL, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on May 20, 2024, at the age of 78. He was born on August 29, 1945, to Roman J Selig, Jr and Augustine Sandor Selig in Seattle, Washington. Roman grew up in Corning, Arkansas, with strong family ties to his sister and five brothers.
Roman attended the University of Arkansas and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In 2002, he was inducted into the University of Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering. He proudly ran track at the University of Arkansas, lettered in and Co-Captained Track and Cross Country. Roman also served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, including a tour with commendation in Vietnam.
Roman had an extensive career in the concrete pipe industry, becoming a valued resource for his expertise in the business. He received the Richard E. Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Concrete Pipe Association for his years of dedicated service and advancement of the concrete pipe industry. He was granted an Award of Merit and the honorary title of Fellow of ASTM International, which is the highest recognition for individual contributors to standards activities. Other honors with ASTM International include the Merlin G. “IB” Spangler Award, recognizing his outstanding technical contribution, and The Frank J. Heger Memorial Award for distinguished services.
Roman was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for 44 years, including serving as a fourth degree Knight and a Grand Knight. He was dedicated to his Catholic faith as a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, contributing his time and talents. He volunteered often at Her Choice Birmingham Women’s Center. His interests and hobbies included any and all Arkansas Razorbacks sports, playing “at” golf with friends, music, and telling well-crafted jokes. He was always fun at parties and loved making people laugh.
He married Margaret (Peggy) Selig on April 26, 1969, in Texarkana, Arkansas at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, and they shared 55 years of marriage, strong in their faith which they passed down to their three children, Stephanie Selig Lachina, Jennifer Selig, and Nicholas Selig. Roman was grandfather (Papa) to Zachary Lachina. They were best buds from day one, comrades, partners-in-crime, with a very special bond.
Roman is survived by his spouse, Margaret, and children, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Nicholas, and grandchild, Zachary, as well as his brothers Philip, John, Michael, Stephen, Paul, and his sister Anna, along with many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply and profoundly missed.
Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, followed by Mass at 10:00 am on May 28, 2024, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Birmingham, AL.
