When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity☹️.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold caves

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed

Rest easy Doc, your soul will forever be in our hearts✊

You will be dearly missed especially by the medical fraternity and memories of you will certainly remain indelible in our hearts. I was so priveledged to have served as General Secretary for SLMDA under your tenure as president. Your passion and commitment was indescribable. Rest well mentor.

I came to know Dr Smith in 2015 while I was working with UNICEF. He was one of the few medical Doctors who was very discipline, dedicated and committed to his work. He has passion for his work and always willing and going the extra mile to ensure you succeed in your work. Then in 2018, I became more closer to Dr Smith while working with Health Poverty Action. He was very supportive and will do all he can to ensure all our activities are successful. He would be forever missed. A big loss to the health sector and the Country as a whole. Dr Smith, you have played your part and support many people to have decent lives through your dedication to duty. Now is time for you to take your rest and sleep until the resurrection day when Jesus will come take us home. Good night and take your rest.

Dr. Smith, an elder brother, senior colleague, true friend and people’s person, rest in our savior’s arms. For over twenty years you have demonstrated love and support to anybody that crossed your path. I do remember your prayers and support when I lost my mum two years ago, I still recall your calls and text messages when I was in quarantine for28days. One of the few senior colleague that will always reach out in good and bad times within MOHS. Our teacher, mentor and prayer partner. I am still reading your new year prayers for me and my family. Thank you for your show of love and kindness to us all. We will forever miss you. RIPP Dr. Smith.

Dr Smith was a dynamic, strong and hard working man. His death is a bitter pill for us to swallow.

It’s no secret he was a workaholic and gave his best to the fight against Malaria.

He inculcated the spirit of team work at NMCP and supported us all to be managers in our own right.

He was always willing to give a listening ear with his hand folded on his chest followed with genuine advice.

He respected all with no boundaries.

He was a fatherly figure. Caring, giving, friendly, very outspoken but did not compromise his work.

What a loss to his family, programme, MoHS and the country.

I feel fortunate and privileged to have worked closely with him and grateful for the guidance and experience gained from him.

I can go on and on...

Rest Well from your Labor Dr. Samuel Juana Smith.

Sorely Missed. SPA

Dr. Samuel Juana Smith! You were a great friend, a fine professional and a passionate MD. I personally admired your integrity, work ethic and passion for healthcare service delivery in SL. My country has certainly lost a bright mind and a great servant. At NMSA, we will forever remember you for the pathway you created for us; the counsel you guided us with; the comfort you inspired in us. Your openness to new energy and innovative ideas was brilliant. Go take your rest my good friend!! I will definitely miss your pats on the back and that laughter. May your gentle soul RIPP!! May God grant peace and comfort to the family you left behind......

You were a beacon of hope and encouragement to most of us (COMAHS students), and helped us through the stressful COMAHS course with laughter and fatherly/brotherly love.
This is a path we are all meant to take, yet we feel the pains of your sudden departure. May light perpetual shine on you and may your soul rest in perfect peace.

Dr Smith, my friend and my colleague. News of your passing left me crying for the rest of the very sad day yesterday. It is a terrible loss for your family and your country. It was such an honor and a privilege to work with you. You always fought for your people and your country and I admire you so much for that. You were a true mountain lion (Sierra Leone) for your country. The world is a poorer place without you in it, and we will surely miss your dedication to saving lives. I will miss you dearly for these qualities and also for your wonderful laugh -- infectious in the best way! I am heartbroken. May your memory be a blessing.

Dear boss, this is hard!!! We cannot imagine that this is the end. No more you in the office, in meetings,on the phone!!! No more of that loud infectious laugh, no more of the palava. As you were laid to rest today, all I could think was to say thank you. Thank you for instilling in me a confidence I never knew I had, for believing in me, for instilling in me a sense of responsibility and commitment to my job, my profession and the country as a whole. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to capacitate myself in any way you could. Recently when you were on leave and I sought advice from you on some work that we were doing you replied " I want the team to think out of the box without me, you are all managers in your own right". Little did we know that we would soon lose our reference point! But one thing I know for sure, we will not lose the knowledge you instilled in us. We will take comfort in the legacies you left behind!!! Thank you so much sir for giving me the opportunity to have worked with you. Rest well Dr Samuel Juana Smith

Vote of Thanks Memorial for the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, former Director-DPC and Programme Mana

February 23, 2021
Good afternoon all,

On behalf of Management and Staff of NMCP and the RBM Partnership, I want to thank God Almighty for His mercy and grace over us and for making it possible for us to actualise this memorial in honour of the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith, former Director-DPC and Programme Manager-NMCP, MoHS.

To all Sympathisers and Partners, we are grateful you are able to make it this ceremony despite your busy schedules coupled with COVID-19 pandemic fight. Some sympathisers would have loved to be physically present, but could not due to circumstances beyond their control but rather joined through virtual connection. This demonstrates the high level of partnership between you as individuals or organisations/institutions, the NMCP and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

This partnership has been strengthened over the years by the late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith through his management and leadership with the hope of eliminating and finally eradicating malaria in Sierra Leone. He always emphasized to us that the fight against malaria cannot be won without stronger partnership.

On behalf of the MoHS, NMCP and the RBM Partnership, I thank you very much and may God richly bless you abundantly.

To the NMCP staff and RBM Partnership, I will be remiss in my duty if I fail to appreciate and thank you all. Thank you for all your efforts in putting this activity together.

The late Dr. Samuel Juana Smith believed in team work and capacity building. He usually advised and encouraged us on team work and to think out of the box focusing on achievement of set targets. To promote team work, some of his exact words he usually told us was, “do it the Arsenal way”. I will go on and on, on and on but time could not permit me.

I want to thank the leadership and the entire MoHS. A special thanks to the NMCP staff for standing by him to ensure that we achieve our set targets as a team and move malaria fight from grass to an admirable level.

Finally, I want to thank myself for taking this bold step to stand here and give this vote of thanks.

May the soul of Dr. Samuel Juana Smith and souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace. Amen. God bless us all.
