OBITUARY

Vivien "Ingkie" Ordinario Oropel passed away at Burnaby Hospital on November 8, 2023 at 5:45 AM. She is survived by her husband Teddy and her children, Vincent, Sean, John, and Justin. She is also survived by her mother, Nanay Elsa, her beloved siblings and in-laws, Nestor (Perna), Jane (Paco), Helen, Erel (Genevieve), Joffrey (Nancy), Juean (Jachyl), Nie-ann and Ernesto Jr. (Diana), and her many nieces and nephews. Vivien is preceded in death by her father Ernesto Sr. and her brother Ronald.

Vivien’s childhood and younger years were spent in Cotabato. She studied high school at Notre Dame of Kidapawan for Girls, after which she went to Davao to take up B.S. in Nursing at the Davao Doctors College. She passed the nursing licensure exams in 1995 and was employed as a school nurse in the Department of Education in 1996.

Like many thousands of Filipino women before her, Vivien left for Canada in 2001 and worked in Vancouver as a live-in caregiver to support her family.

It was painful to leave her two young sons behind in the care of her husband Teddy (Panoy) and her family. When she completed her caregiver program, she was reunited with her family and was blessed with two more sons born in Canada.

Vivien was always generous with her time in the community. She would become a core member of the Filipino Nurses Support Group. In 2009, she helped launch the grassroots and community-based group Migrante BC as one of its founding members and was active in the many programs and activities of Migrante BC. At its first assembly in 2011, she was acclaimed as one of the Migrante BC's  seven member- coordinating collective: Vivien Oropel together with Florchita Bautista, Ana Cagas-Tabella, Leo Alejandria,  Juliet Rivada, Marjorie Eda, and Jane Ordinario.

Vivien served as one of the many frontline and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, working as a nurse during this difficult period at the Three Links Care Society. She was a union member of the BC Nurses Union (BCNU).

As a nurse, Vivien also worked on-call and casual basis at the Willingdon Care Center, Dania Home, Normanna Nursing, Chartwell Carlton Retirement Home, and Threelinks Care Center until she became a full-time worker at Three Links.

In February 2022, Vivien was diagnosed with Stage 4 bile duct cancer. She went through a series of chemotherapy which she said helped with her appetite and also lessened the pain. She appreciated the love and support of her family and friends and embraced hope in prayer.

Vivien, you are forever missed.  Rest in peace. Thank you for everything.

"To everyone.....

I would like to personally thank you for the overwhelming support and love we have felt during this difficult time of losing our Queen Vivien "Ingkie" Oropel.

SO LONG FAREWELL, my wife.
I love you.

Hi Kie, it's too early, but I know God has the best plan for you. You did your best during the battle. Likewise, you have done a lot during your stay. You have a big heart, especially for those who are in need. There was a time Grace, our niece suffered from cancer. You called me kung paano ka makatabang until time na Grace bid goodbye, you called me up again to give assistance sa iyang burial. Sige ko pasalamat sa imo..and you said kinsa pa ang "Magtibangay" kundi kita.
You had also initiated a first-time reunion for the cousins. You called me to arrange the said event and so we did. But, that our firt time would also be the last to have you. Until ang next na tawag nimo just to inform me regarding your conditions but still you managed magpatawa. We don't use to call, but we constantly send messages about our lifestyles.

On October 19, 2023, ako ang nitawag sa imo. Hearing your voice sounded like crying but still mosulti ka na okay ka. Until the end, you kindness still prevails by saying your last word, "Salamat sa pagtawag".

Thank you so much for the memories..We used to sleep on the floor as our bed during college, but I know that bed turned into a huge one before your new chapter. Forever in our hearts. Fly high!

Kie I want to thank you for everything and being a good cousin to me. Until we totally lost communication. MA-MISS KA NAMIN OUR DEAR COUSIN. May your soul rest in paradise with our creator♥️

From Joyce Lovitos,
Hi! Vien,

I will surely missed you. I will miss your beautiful smile. Your voice and laughters echoing in my ears.

You are like a sister to me. I always invite you in every events especially on my special day, my wedding day and I made it sure you're my bridesmaid.
You always invite me too in your parties and events. I remembered I was one of the godmothers of your son John.

Those were memories I want to behold of you but I could not forget our trip in Vietnam with WFG, so much fun, laughters and food. Our exclusive party with Desi in the revolving restaurant celebrating your birthday and Desi. You are both Geminis and I am the only Taurus.

It pains me not seeing you around for awhile but I'm looking forward on the rapture hopefully soon, where we can see you again. That would be our Grand Reunion.

I believe you can see everybody and praying everyone could come to the place where you are now ... heaven. I BELIEVE YOU HAVE CROWNS AND REWARDS AND YOU DESERVE IT.

Thanks for praying for us and interceding our salvation. To God be the glory.

From Inday Gemma Herbilla |Kiyaab, Antipas, Cotabato

My Kababata.

She is my closest kababata upod ko maghampang, manguban para ka kwarta kami kag pareho kami may honor first ako second siya.Maestro akon tatay kag iya kapitan.

I will never forget how our younger years memories isa sa indi ko malimtan during our elementary years nga ginhaboy niya sang surot ang amon klasmeyt sa kaugot niya nga ginasunlog siya nga putot kag kulot. Tell niya small but terrible.Yes gamay nga babae pero mapisan bright kag very responsible.Ginaadmire ko gid ang iya pagkatandos.

Indi man kami gacommunicate pirme pero later this days nagkaproblema ko kag siya gid nagbulig sa akon.Kag didto niya gisugid ang iya sakit. So i told her ti pahulamon mo ko kwarta gasakit ka man.Tell niya ok lang day damo man ko extra.I'm so thankful because gigamit siya ni God to help me kay i Prayed so hard kag pag open ko sang phone ko iya name nag appear.

So i asked her if she can help me kag waay nagduha duha gintagaan niya ko.Thank you gid ky kay nabuligan mo ko sa pagpadoktor kay ganda.

But i told her Only God may control sang tanan.Kay nag thumbs up ka.

Sad to note nga pagbalik ko sa school after long weekends na shock ko kay nagrabe ka. I chatted you pero waay na reply.

Thank you nga before ka nawala sa amon nagkacoversation pa kita i know you love me.

I love you my kababata and a our friendship is uncomparable. I know you prepared your soul for meeting God .

Rest in peace my dearest friend Ingke.

To Ordinario-Oropel family and friends,

Do accept these written words...sending you our hugs and deepest sympathy as you grieve and celebrate the life of your beloved wife to Ted, loving mother to Vincent, Sean, John and Justin, caring daughter to Nanay Elsa, wonderful sister to her siblings, sister-in-law, auntie and supportive friend to us all.

I have had the privilege to be one of the many compatriot-friends and good friend of Vivien during the formation of the Filipino Nurses Support group and Migrante BC. She was always happy to take on tasks or volunteer to help on Migrante’s campaigns.

I love coming to gatherings when I know Vivien is bringing food (kasi laging masarap; always yummy). Masayang kasama si Vivien, caring and thoughtful.

When CPSHR (a solidarity organization) held a “Sacrificial Dinner” for political prisoners, we asked for donation of lugaw (rice porridge). Vivien, sent her regrets due to work, instead, she sent a pot of porridge for the event.

Adage say -
If you want to know someone’s mind, listen to their words. If you want to know their heart, watch their actions. Vivien had a kind heart.

May we find strength on the beautiful memories of Vivien. We thank life and the life well-lived for her family, friends and her community.

May the comforting presence of the Great Spirit keep and uphold each member of your family as we continue our journey... living life to the fullest and for others.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God!

SALAMAT VIVIEN. REST NOW IN PEACE.

I’d know if you are my friend if there’s a food or a song that I can remember you by. The more vivid the food or louder the melody the more significant is that person to me. Ingkie is one such person.

This Christmas I’m sure to miss her macaroni salad, her signature macaroni salad with fruit cocktail and lots of kaong and cheese. I’m thankful for the oxtail kare-kare that she cooked and grateful to have sat down for lunch with her in the 1st week of October.

Taos pusong pakikiramay sa buong pamilya ni Vivien - to her husband and children and the whole Ordinario and Oropel clans.

I first met Vivien and her sister Jane in the Kalayaan Centre as part of the old Philippine Women’s Centre and Filipino Nurses Support Group. She made a strong impression as a dedicated community advocate who balance her personal, family, career and community lives. She was not the type who relished being in the limelight and would prefer tending over the child care, food, reception and other community needs that made frontline work possible. Always the caring and helping hand, Vivien often said yes to many workshops and learning opportunities.

I am so sorry for not knowing she had been sick for the past year. And yet, I thought this would have been Vivian’s preference- carrying our private pains in private and making public the stories, policies and issues that matter.

I used to tease you about caring for your all-boys basketball team of five. Your team will now forever miss their beautiful muse.

Our community will miss you and your dedicated service.

I will miss your lovely smile and twinkling eyes, Vivien. Rest in peace.

We all knew (our Sons and I) that LIFE will never be as colourful and joyous as it was BUT we also know that she herself would like to see us bonded with love as we GO FORTH with LIFE ahead of us.
SO LONG FAREWELL, my wife.
I love you.
Again, thank you and God bless us all."

Vivien, nurse & frontline worker

November 12, 2023
Vivien, like many nurses & frontline workers and essential workers in the health sector and others, took care of our elderly and the sick, lifted our hopes up, and kept our communities going during the difficult years under COVID-19. Vivien showed us that nursing was a calling and not just a job. Yes, she was one of our many heroes of the battle against COVID-19.
This quote from Mother Teresa describes Vivien as a nurse and a wonderful human being: “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.  Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”

Paalam, Vivien Ordinario Oropel (1973-2023)
To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. – Thomas Campbell

Vivien "Ingkie" Ordinario Oropel, 50 years old, passed away at Burnaby Hospital on November 8, 2023, at 5:45 AM. She is survived by her husband Teddy “Panoy” and her children Vincent, Sean, John, and Justin.

She is also survived by her mother, Nanay Elsa, her beloved siblings and in-laws, Nestor (Perna), Jane (Paco), Helen, Erel (Genevieve), Joffrey (Nancy), Juean (Jachyl), Nie-ann, and Ernesto Jr. (Diana), and her many nieces and nephews. Vivien is preceded in death by her father Ernesto Sr. and her brother Ronald.

Vivien’s childhood and younger years were spent in Cotabato. She studied high school in Notre Dame of Kidapawan for Girls after which she went to Davao to study nursing at the Davao Doctors College. She passed the nursing licensure exams in 1995 and was employed as a school nurse in the Department of Education in 1996.

Like many thousands of Filipino women before her, Vivien left for Canada in 2001 and worked in Vancouver as a live-in caregiver to support her family. She was determined to finish the required 24 months under the LCP program, sponsor her husband Ted and two young sons Vincent and Sean so they could be reunited. She did and her family grew with two more sons John and Justin born in Canada.

Rather than be deskilled, Vivien challenged the system so she could work as a nurse. She took and passed both the English language exam and the nurses’ exam. She was a member of the Filipino Nurses Support Group (FNSG) under the defunct Philippine Women’s Centre. Vivien was always generous with her time in the community. In 2009, she was one of the many founding members of Migrante BC, the grassroots organization of Filipino migrants and immigrants, and was very active in the many programs and activities of Migrante BC.

She served as one of the many frontline and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, working as a nurse during this difficult period at the Three Links Care Society. She was a union member of the BC Nurses Union (BCNU). Before she became a full-time worker at Three Links, she worked on-call and casual basis at the Willingdon Care Center, Dania Home, Normanna Nursing, Chartwell Carlton Retirement Home.

In February 2022, Vivien was diagnosed with Stage 4 bile duct cancer. She went through a series of chemotherapy which she said helped with her appetite and lessened the pain. She appreciated the love and support of her family and friends and embraced hope in prayer.

The members of the extraordinary Ordinario clan are either founding members, members, or proud supporters of Migrante BC. Vivien and a younger brother Ronald were both founding members of Migrante. Both are forever missed.

To post a tribute to Vivien, express your condolences, share stories and photos, please go to the online memorial for Vivien Ordinario Oropel at https://www.forevermissed.com/vivien-ordinario-oropel/about.

Vivien, you are forever missed.  Rest in peace. Thank you for everything.###
